The name KlitzGras is derived from the Klitsgras plant - a weed found in the veld. In 2004 the couple Ferdie and Polla Haefele purchased the 3.2 hectares of property located in the Lydenburg town, ideally visible to all visitors from the Dullstroom and Machadodorp road. Their goal was to provide a convenient and luxurious stay for both visitors and motorcyclists, especially since Ferdie is an avid motorcyclist himself - the proud owner of a BMW 1100. Ferdie was a qualified Technical teacher at the Lydenburg High School He is also an accomplished architect and registered builder. Ferdie planned and built the entire resort himself.

Without using a single tin of paint, the chalets have been built using natural rocks found on the estate. Even the thatched roofs were harvested from the grounds. His wife, Polla, was responsible for the interior decorations, and in keeping with the natural look and feel of the buildings, created a soothing atmosphere where visitors can relax and enjoy the tranquility of the Steenkamps-mountains environment. The chalets overlook a natural valley abundant with bird species, with several rare species spotted by avid birdwatchers. The dam, a few steps from the patio, is alive with several fish species, including Swartbaars and Kurpers. River streams and exotic wild flowers provide a feast for the eye.
